ANATHEMA, a well known name from the UK that immediately reminds of alternative music, had gone a long way from bleak metal to the progressive and melodic rock music that they play today. Having combined the legendary big three of British doom metal together with MY DYING BRIDE and PARADISE LOST, ANATHEMA enriched the world history of extreme music by providing it with such masterpieces as ‘Serenades‘ and ‘The Silent Enigma‘.
After pleasing the listeners with their first albums, full of massive sound and deep, bestial vocals, ANATHEMA stopped hesitating and eventually chose a pioneer path. Over time, the band started putting more and more of gentle sound, clean vocals and ethereal melodies into their music. Heaviness was replaced with tenderness, anger – with disappointment and sorrow, aggression became serenity and black got overwhelmed with white.
Continuing to cherish atmospheric rock, the band members now admit that alternation of their musical style is a natural and spontaneous thing. Smooth mood, characterful rhythmics, instrumental experiments and the expression of vocals are just a few of many significant features that ANATHEMA‘s music possesses. All this is being done for the one and only purpose of music - to affect its listeners, make them feel a spiritual lift or bring them to the coldest depths of soul.
The musicians state that their band is one big family, born to create ANATHEMA. Brothers Danny, Vincent and Jamie, as well as their childhood friend John and his sister Lee are bound both by ties of blood and hard times they have outlived together. This may be proved by songs, written for the mother of the three brothers whom they had tragically lost, and Danny’s determination to quit drugs in 2005…
ANATHEMA is a family that walks within the broad musical path, exploring the infinite space for creativity, every time expressing themselves with a different sound, performing shows all over the world, attracting crowds of new fans and retaining the respect of the old ones.
